— Licorice, Dangerous Night

Licorice (リコリス) is a demon and the son of Satanick and Ivlis. He has been a main character in a number of Deep-Sea Prisoner's Sunahama comics.

Physical Description[]

Licorice has two known forms: an adult form and a child form. He has raceless white skin and black nails. His eyes are orange like Ivlis', and his straight hair with two longer front pieces is dark just like Satanick's. His horns bear a similar shape to Ivlis' and have a similar color to that of Satanick's. They have been described as a half-and-half mixture between his parents, having a texture harder than wood. [2]

As a child, he sports a boy's uniform-type outfit consisting of a white dress shirt with a black blazer over shorts and suspenders. He also has white knee socks, black dress shoes, and a ribbon around his neck with a red ornament on it. He carries a lollipop as well.

As an adult, he has a long ponytail that curls on the ends. His adult form is taller than Ivlis. As an adult, he wears a black suit similar to Satanick's and the ribbon around his neck becomes a black tie. Under his suit jacket is a vest over a dress shirt. He also wears a large cape with wing shapes at the top and a purple interior.

In some illustrations, he is seen with a tail in which the colors are a mixture of purple and red. The style of his tail is similar to Ivlis'.

Personality[]

Licorice is said to be at a difficult age. [2] At times, Licorice can be rather stoic and frigid to those such as Satanick, Envi, and Adauchi. To those that displease him, Licorice displays open contempt, vulgarity, and even violence with enough provocation. Usually, when in undesirable company, he is in his adult form. He uses the personal pronoun "boku." [3]

Although capable of brutality, Licorice is surprisingly childish; he bears a strong disposition for candy, accepting sweets from even the likes of his father. When around people he likes, Licorice can be naïve and awkward, a reversal compared to his demeanor used with people he finds to be anathema. The largest example of his potential for kindness is Ivlis, his mother. Licorice bears a ferocious need to protect his mother from those he deems to be threats, using violence wherever and whenever necessary. Licorice is described as "a very earnest and talented young man who grew up with a lot of love except that he fell in love with his mother." [4] Licorice is also said to have a stronger mental state than his parents because he grew up loved. [5] When asked what Licorice's sexuality was Deep-Sea Prisoner replied "Mama." [6] She also commented, "If I had to say whether he is bi or gay, I would say he is more on the gay side." [6] When Licorice rented a video at Hidou's video shop as shown in an illustration, the content was male-on-male as he wanted to study how to be with a man. [6]

Like his parents, Licorice has a sweet tooth but hates carrots. [7] He loves candy even as an adult. [8] Licorice does not want another sibling. [9] He would be jealous of a new hypothetical baby taking up Ivlis' attention but would still be a doting older brother. [10] He sometimes attends school. [11]

Background[]

Licorice was created from Satanick’s desire of having a child with Ivlis. It is shown in Seaside Dispatches 1 that Licorice was born because Ivlis also wanted to have a child with Satanick. Throughout his childhood, Licorice acquired a fondness for Ivlis and came to identify the Flame Devil as his mother. His relationship with his father Satanick is considerably strained — due to Satanick’s abusive treatment of Ivlis — thus, Licorice chose to live together with his mother in the Flame Underworld. He still regularly visits Ne-no-Kuni. [5]

Ivlis[]

Licoivlis

Licorice's unrequited love for Ivlis.

Ivlis is the father of Licorice, though Licorice identifies Ivlis as his mother and calls him "Mama" (in his child form - "kaa-san" without the honorific "o" at the start) or "Mother" (in his adult form). [3] As an infant he would call Ivlis "Ma." [3] Licorice will also call Ivlis' genderbend version Mama, due to Ivlis/Ivlin having given birth to him. [13] Ivlis breastfed Licorice when he was an infant. [14] Around Ivlis as a child, Licorice speaks kind of shy and sweet; as an adult, he talks in a more rushed/intense manner. [3] When asked what Ivlis' feelings were towards Licorice's birth, Deep-Sea Prisoner said it is hard to say since half his spirit had caved in during that time. [15] However, Ivlis got pregnant because he wanted to. [16]

Ivlis became a lot softer after Licorice was born. [17] Licorice genuinely loves and cares for Ivlis, and will do all he can to ensure Ivlis' safety, most notably from Satanick. He also does not like when others (mainly Satanick) are interested in his mother. [18] He is very protective towards Ivlis and reacts violently to any of those who oppose his mother, as seen in his treatment of Satanick and disapproving look to Adauchi in an artwork. Licorice is not violent, but he will intercede on Ivlis' behalf [19] when Ivlis is confronted by overwhelming opposition. Licorice also seems to like drawing things for Ivlis as shown in a mini-comic and Sunahama update.

Licorice seems to enjoy spending time with Ivlis, even going as far as to sleep in his bed with him during the Nightmare mini-comics. He takes advantage of his "kid privileges" in being able to share the same bed with him. Licorice has been described as mentally strong enough, having no trouble taking advantage of the fact that he is a child. He does not care how others view him, simply using his status to get special privileges. [20]

Licoiv danger

Licorice's advancement on Ivlis during Dangerous Night.

Over time, Licorice developed feelings for Ivlis, as seen in the Like Mother, Like Son mini-comics. Be it Ivlis or Ivlin, Licorice would have liked him/her since his sexuality is "Mama." [6] Deep-Sea Prisoner also commented that Ivlis and Licorice are almost similar in terms of their sexuality being more homosexual. [6] Confused as to what he was experiencing, Licorice sought counsel from his caretaker Emalf. However, Licorice is still in turmoil as to what he is experiencing and ends up approaching his mother while he sleeps in Dangerous Night. Giving in to temptation, Licorice only ceases his activities when Ivlis calls out for Satanick to stop. Horrified by what he has done, Licorice flees to his room. He is then seen cowering under a blanket, shivering while apologizing profusely to Ivlis for acting no better than his father Satanick. In following Sunahama updates, it is shown that while their relationship is not damaged due to Ivlis’ ignorance of Licorice’s actions, Licorice also has not presented any signs of owning up to his mistake and seems to be leaving his mother in the dark about the ordeal, regardless of the consequences. When asked why Licorice did what he did to Ivlis in Dangerous Night, it was stated that he simply has perverse proclivities, and it had nothing to do with Satanick's blood. [21]

In the Genderbend (AU), Licorice's genderbend Licorin likes Ivlin. [22]

Satanick[]

Lico protect

Licorice's protective treatment of Ivlis.

Satanick is Licorice's other father and calls him "Papa" (in his child form - "tou-san" rather than "outu-san") [3] or "Father" (in his adult form). As an infant he would call Satanick "Ba" (short for dumbass/horseshit}. [3] Satanick consistently uses gross babytalk to Licorice. [3] Satanick was the one to have named Licorice. [23] However, their relationship is extremely strained, and Licorice borders on hating Satanick’s very being. Licorice apparently sees Satanick as "that unpleasant, disgusting, and obviously useless thing that dares call itself my father," and nothing less. He refrains from addressing him as much as possible, using heavy insults and a judgmental attitude. [3] While in his adult form, Licorice will express disgust when he looks into the mirror and sees how he resembles his father. [2] Satanick, on the other hand, is rather keen on gaining Licorice's favor as he has failed with his first son Glasses. Unfortunately, Licorice does not seem to want to reciprocate those feelings.

Due to Satanick’s less-than-desirable treatment of Ivlis, Licorice has chosen to live with his mother in the Flame Underworld and acts as a sort of guardian for Ivlis whenever Satanick begins to act up.

In the Distorted Love comics, Licorice goes as far as threatening to take Satanick’s life even when his father is bedridden. However, before attempting to do the deed, he does make an effort to ask for Satanick's consent. When Satanick appears to give permission, Licorice seems genuinely bemused by it. However, Envi arrives and stops Licorice before anything could be done. With the two seemingly ready to cross swords, Satanick calls them out, only to begin vomiting, stopping both Licorice and Envi as Licorice looks on with a troubled expression, and Envi goes to Satanick’s side. The event, however, ends with Licorice leaving without a word after his father steadies himself.

Permission

Licorice asking permission to take Satanick's life.

In the Like Mother, Like Son comic, Licorice grows uncomfortable with Satanick's efforts in gaining Ivlis' affection. While he understands that Ivlis and Satanick's relationship improving (even just slightly) is considered a good thing for Ivlis’ sake, Licorice has stated himself he is only "half-glad" about the occurrence and does not clearly understand about "the other half’s feelings."

In the Dangerous Night comic, Licorice is seen horrified after realizing what he has done to Ivlis. It is then apparent that Licorice fears of becoming like his father Satanick. In later Sunahama updates, it is shown that Licorice continues to feel disturbed by Satanick’s presence, as seen in a sketch log of Ivlis, Satanick, and him in what seems to be a family photo. It has been stated that while Satanick is publicly nasty in his desires, Licorice keeps his own somewhat quiet. [20] In Deep-Sea Prisoner's 17th drawing livestream, it was stated Satanick loves both Licorice and Ivlis very much. [24]

Deep-Sea Prisoner once thought of an illustration idea in which Satanick cooked for Licorice. However, the meal would be Ivlis' arms. The idea was scrapped due to feeling sorry for Licorice. More importantly, it was stated Satanick would never do such a thing to his own children. [25] If Satanick was to get Ivlis pregnant again, Licorice would "cut off something important" of Satanick's. [10]

In the Genderbend (AU), Licorice's genderbend Licorin dislikes Satanica. [22]

Adauchi[]

Adauchi is Licorice's half-brother, both being children of Ivlis. They were seen briefly interacting in a TEGAKI illustration. Licorice doesn't seem to be particularly fond of Adauchi due to Adauchi's hatred towards Ivlis. Adauchi doesn't seem to know who Licorice is.

In Funamushi Private Deep-Sea Academy, Licorice and Adauchi fight for Ivlis' attention. [26]

Poemi[]

Poemi is Licorice's half-sister, both being children of Ivlis. They are seemingly on good terms with each other. As briefly shown at the start of the Distorted Love 2 mini-comic, they once went on a camping trip together with Emalf as their chaperone.

Glasses[]

Glasses is Licorice's half-brother. They are both children of Satanick. They were briefly seen interacting in a TEGAKI illustration. Licorice seems to like Glasses, though Glasses is shown to be a little surprised by Licorice's existence. He also used to be confused by it. [27] Licorice respects his older brother, thinking he is cool for rebelling against Satanick. Glasses in turn treats Licorice in a gentle manner. [27]

4100

Lil flirting with Licorice.

Lil[]

Lil is Licorice's step-mother. In a mini-comic, Lil flirts with him just because he looks like his father Satanick. In the Seaside Dispatches series, Licorice consults Lil in order to plot his revenge on Envi. She tells one of her three female subordinates to help him. [28]

Fumus[]

Fumus is Licorice's uncle. They have never met, but Licorice knows who he is. [29]

Crea Flankenstein[]

Crea is Licorice's adoptive sister. Although the two have not been seen interacting, Crea and Licorice are said to be friends. [23] Not much else is currently known about the details of their relationship.

Various[]

Emalf[]

Emalf seems to act as Licorice's caretaker and has been seen coming home from camping together with Licorice and Poemi when the demon children's parents are unavailable. Licorice appears to be close to Emalf. The intimacy of their relationship is best shown in that Emalf is the one who Licorice goes to when he is troubled, and how Licorice appears to feel comfortable enough to confide in Emalf and seek out the older demon’s thoughts on things.

Totallynormal

Emalf reassuring Licorice that his feelings are normal.

In the Like Mother, Like Son comics, Licorice, after gaining confused feelings on his parents' relationship, heads out at night to find Emalf sitting on a cliff far from the castle, and promptly speaks to Emalf about how he feels himself becoming abnormal; getting a strange feeling in his chest whenever he thinks of his mother, Ivlis. Emalf gawks at him with wide eyes, evidently surprised by the confession, but regains himself moments after to prevent Licorice from being inflicted by worry. Though he lacks in understanding of how Licorice's incestuous feelings for his devil came to be, Emalf attempted with his best in assuring Licorice that he will be fine, and there is nothing to be concerned about. After the event, however, Emalf is seen worrying over Licorice’s disclosure to the point of neglecting to answer Poemi’s question.

Silhouette[]

Silhouette and Licorice may meet in the future and become good friends if Satanick brings Licorice with him to the Gray Garden. [30] Silhouette and Licorice's parents would be confused but pleased with them becoming friends. "They may be confused and wary at first, but as soon as they see the children playing nicely together, they will feel at ease and watch them smilingly from afar." [31]

Satanick's Subordinates[]

Envi[]

Envi and Licorice have been at odds for a long while due to their differing views of Satanick. The two seem to constantly be at each others' throats each time they meet with no visible conclusion. An example is in the Sunahama update I Cannot Rest where Envi is seen grabbing Licorice's child form by the collar and has chained the young demon’s hands behind his back, all the while Licorice struggles to get free. One of the things that exacerbates Envi's anger towards Licorice is his arrogant attitude. [5] The fact that Licorice's face looks very similar to Satanick's also upsets him. [5]

Licogyak

"You brat..."

In the Distorted Love comics, Licorice comes to Ne-no-Kuni with the intention of killing his father but is stopped when Envi points a keris to his neck, stating that whoever opposes the Devil, be it their own son, shall have no mercy. Licorice arrogantly underestimates Envi, saying Envi's sort "usually isn’t much against something like a demon..." with Envi retorting that Licorice should not be pushing his luck, willing to "show how much of a different experience can make." However, their threats fall short when Satanick calls them out, only to begin vomiting the moment he sits up. Envi runs to Satanick’s side, and Licorice watches with a troubled expression before wordlessly leaving.

In the Kenka comics, a fight between Envi and Licorice ensues, with Envi being the clear victor. Licorice, having lost his left arm, is pinned to the ground with Envi's keris impaling his chest. Prior to the fight, Licorice is seen glaring at Envi. Envi, however, looks on with a placid expression, only to cast it aside and replace it with a wide slasher smile, proclaiming that since Satanick is far from their location at that moment, there is no one else around, and no one to stop him. In the following Sunahama update, Envi and Licorice Afterward, Licorice is seen chained to the ceiling with multiple cuts and bruises on his body, his clothes mostly open, and Envi's silhouette giving a wicked smile.

In Crime and Punishment, Licorice is shivering and crying with his shirt unbuttoned. In Trauma, Licorice speaks in a resigned manner saying he is fine with having been forced into sexual intercourse for the first time; he does not think of it as an "important first time" and does not "prefer one sex in the first place." He internally laments to his mother that he has been dirtied. Licorice cried for a while at night because of the shock of what Envi did to him. [5] When asked if Licorice and Envi could get along, Deep-Sea Prisoner said, "No." [24] Envi is also more careless than usual while drinking. Deep-Sea Prisoner hinted that this would be a good opportunity for Licorice to take revenge. [28]

Benihotaru, Edabane, Hitoki, Lec Hijoushiki, & Roc Hijoushiki[]

Though they have yet to be shown interacting with Licorice, Deep-Sea Prisoner has said they act sensible and calm when interacting with him. [5]

Hidou[]

Hidou and Licorice seem to have a cordial relationship with each other. Deep-Sea Prisoner has said that - aside from Envi - Hidou and his fellow subordinates act sensible and calm when interacting with Licorice. [5] One mini-comic shows Licorice coming into Hidou's video shop. Hidou warns Licorice that he's too young to be there, at which point Licorice transforms into his adult self. He asks if Hidou can recommend him some vanilla videos with a lovey-dovey mood to which Hidou offers his suggestions.

Kyou[]

Kyou and Licorice are acquaintances. Aside from Envi, Kyou and his fellow subordinates act sensible and calm when interacting with Licorice. [5] Of all Satanick's subordinates, Kyou adores Licorice the most. [32] Kyou will give Licorice head pats and sometimes candy. [6]

Dokugai[]

Dokugai and Licorice are acquaintances. Aside from Envi, Dokugai and his fellow subordinates act sensible and calm when interacting with Licorice. [5] However, Licorice is afraid of Dokugai. [33]

Ltha San Lili, Mel Seno Lili, & Per Sema Lili[]

Licorice, Ltha San Lili, Mel Seno Lili, and Per Sema Lili are acquaintances. In a future volume of Seaside Dispatches (Series), Licorice asks them to teach him how to "top." [28] Since Licorice does not want anyone other than Ivlis to receive his chastity, they take this into consideration and devise a way to teach Licorice accordingly. [28]

Abilities[]

Skillset[]

  • Spear Wielding - As shown in various artworks, Licorice wields a spear.
  • Animal Communication - He is able to speak with bats and with Pooch. The bats only make a high-pitched squeal, but Licorice can understand what they are saying. [8]

Natural Abilities[]

  • Nigh-Absolute Immortality - Being a demon, Licorice cannot die from natural causes such as aging or disease. [34] [35]
  • Regenerative Healing Factor - Being a demon, he is able to regenerate body parts, even guts and bones. [36]
  • Ambidexterity - He is naturally ambidextrous. [37]
  • Light Projectile Summoning - Inherited from Ivlis, Licorice is able to summon light based weapons.
  • Form Modification - Licorice is able to switch from a child to adult freely. When asked during her third livestream if this causes ill-effects on Licorice, Deep-Sea Prisoner confirmed that it does not; it is safe and secure for him to do so. [10] His internal thoughts and mentality totally changes between each of his forms. [20] However, even in his adult form, Licorice's mentality has not matured. [29]He is said to be "a bit special" with this ability. [29]
  • Teleportation - Despite being young, Licorice possesses enough power to travel between worlds as he pleases — a feat achieved only by powerful individuals, such as gods and devils.

Trivia[]

  • Licorice once caught a bat that became attached to him. [29]
  • Since Licorice does not want anyone other than Ivlis to receive his chastity, Lil's subordinates took this into consideration and devised a way to teach Licorice. [28]
